Mallorca Tips: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Planning your holiday in Mallorca? Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to discover more of the island, these practical travel tips will help you make the most of your stay.

From the best time to swim and average holiday costs to transportation, beaches, weather, and local advice, here’s everything you should know before arriving in Mallorca.

1. What’s the weather like in Mallorca throughout the year?

Mallorca enjoys a Mediterranean climate with more than 300 sunny days every year.

Unlike many European destinations, the island is pleasant throughout the year. Summers are hot and dry, while winters remain mild compared to most of Europe.

Over the past three years, climate change has noticeably increased average temperatures, making spring and autumn warmer than historical records suggest.

2. When can you swim in Mallorca?

This is probably the question we receive most often.

The Mediterranean Sea warms slowly during spring but also cools down very slowly after summer.

Swimming season

  • ✅ June
  • ✅ July
  • ✅ August
  • ⭐⭐ September
  • ⭐⭐ October
  • 🌊 November (many people still swim)

Although some visitors start swimming in May, most people find the water much more comfortable from June onwards.

October is often considered the perfect month because the sea is still warm while the beaches are much quieter.

3. Do you need a car in Mallorca?

Yes.

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is thinking Mallorca is a small island.

It isn’t.

Mallorca covers more than 3,600 km², making it the largest island in the Balearics.

7. Is Mallorca only a summer destination?

NOT AT ALL!!! Take a look to all you can do during all the year!

8. Is Mallorca expensive?

Not cheap.

Mallorca can be as affordable—or as luxurious—as you want it to be.

A local café may charge €2 for an espresso, while a beachfront cocktail in an exclusive marina could cost €18.

Travelling outside peak season is the easiest way to enjoy Mallorca while saving money.

9. Can you drink tap water?

More or less.

Tap water is safe to drink.

However, due to its high mineral content, many residents prefer filtered or bottled water for taste.

10. Is Mallorca safe?

Absolutely.

Mallorca is considered one of the safest tourist destinations in Europe.

As in any popular destination, simply take normal precautions in crowded tourist areas and never leave valuables unattended on beaches.

Party Areas to Be Aware Of

Mallorca is an extremely safe destination, but it’s worth knowing that some areas have a very different atmosphere during the peak summer months.

Magaluf and S’Arenal are internationally known for their vibrant nightlife, beach clubs, bars, and party scene. During July and August, these resorts attract thousands of young visitors looking to enjoy late-night entertainment, making them lively, crowded, and often noisy.

If you’re travelling as a family, looking for a romantic getaway, or simply hoping to relax in a peaceful environment, we generally recommend choosing quieter areas such as the East Coast, Portocolom, Cala Murada, Cala d’Or, Porto Cristo, or the North of the island.

Choosing the right location can make a huge difference and ensure you enjoy the kind of holiday you’re looking for.

11. Which beaches should I visit?

Take a look to our article!

12. How many days should I stay?

This is probably one of the questions we receive most often.

The honest answer is simple: the longer, the better!

3 Days – A Great Weekend Escape

A long weekend is perfect if you simply want to disconnect from everyday life. You’ll have enough time to enjoy some beautiful beaches, discover Palma, taste local cuisine, and experience the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle.

However, you’ll only scratch the surface of what Mallorca has to offer.

5 Days – Your First Real Introduction to the Island

If you truly want to start discovering Mallorca, we recommend staying for at least five days.

This gives you enough time to explore different areas of the island, visit a few of its famous beaches, enjoy some mountain villages, and experience more than just the typical tourist attractions.

7 Days – The Perfect First Holiday

A full week is the ideal choice for first-time visitors.

You’ll have time to combine beach days with sightseeing, local markets, hiking, boat trips, traditional villages, and excellent restaurants without feeling rushed.

Most visitors leave after seven days already planning their next trip.

10 Days or More – Discover the Real Mallorca

Mallorca is much larger and more diverse than many people expect.

I’ve been living on the island for over ten years, and I still discover hidden coves, charming villages, scenic hiking trails, and places I’ve never visited before.

The more time you spend here, the more you’ll realise that Mallorca isn’t just a beach destination—it’s an island full of history, nature, culture, gastronomy, and unforgettable experiences waiting around every corner.

13.Is Mallorca Groups Friendly?

Very much so.

The island offers:

  • Shallow beaches
  • Pubs and Restaurants
  • Water parks
  • Boat excursions
  • Caves
  • Nature parks
  • Hiking trails
  • Many water sports

14.In my luggage…

  • ✔ Sunscreen
  • ✔ Swimwear
  • ✔ Comfortable walking shoes
  • ✔ Sunglasses
  • ✔ A light jacket for spring and autumn evenings
  • ✔ Hiking shoes if you plan to visit the Tramuntana Mountains
  • ✔ A reusable water bottle

18. What are the biggest mistakes tourists make?

  • trying to visit the whole island in one day
  • renting a scooter instead of a car
  • staying only in Palma
  • missing the local villages
  • eating only in tourist restaurants
  • forgetting sunscreen
  • assuming Mallorca is just beaches

Insider Tips from myOM

  • ⭐ Visit in September or October if possible.
  • ⭐ Explore the East Coast—it offers some of Mallorca’s most beautiful coves.
  • ⭐ Don’t try to see the whole island in two days.
  • ⭐ Book your rental car early during summer.
  • ⭐ Discover local festivals—they’re one of the best ways to experience authentic Mallorca.
  • ⭐ Leave at least one day with no plans. Some of Mallorca’s best memories come from simply wandering through a small village, discovering a hidden beach or enjoying a long seaside lunch.
